My thoughts on monitoring tools, techniques, best practices etc. all with low cost tools.
There are a number of monitoring tools on the market. Some are expensive, some useful, some are both. My focus here is useful tools with a cost of 1,000USD or less. So far, I have not found the "Holy Grail" of monitoring at any price. I have found a set of specific tools that work well, provide a wealth of useful information and won't break the bank no matter what the budget is. The focus will be on Windows based tools but will touch on cross-platform and *nix systems as well.
A couple of the products on the review list are Intuit's Network Monitor, IpMonitor 7, IPsentry, and Servers Alive. Discussion about add ons and complementary tools(syslog, config management, event log agents, etc.) will be up as well.
More coming soon. It takes a while to gather all my chicken scratch, scraps of paper, and semi-coherent thoughts in html.
